_p_e_o_p_l_e_p_a_g_e_s provides phonebook-like database capabilities for InPersonTM
and other communication tools. The database is comprised of a number of
_b_o_o_k_s. Complete information about people & places you need to contact can
be stored in these books. _p_e_o_p_l_e_p_a_g_e_s displays a list of the available
books. You click on the desired book to select it.
_p_e_o_p_l_e_p_a_g_e_s' main window displays a list of entries from the current
book. Each entry has a draggable icon which can be dropped on InPerson,
MediaMailTM & other communication tools to initiate communication with
that person.
Double-clicking the icon opens an _I_n_f_o_r_m_a_t_i_o_n _C_a_r_d for that person
showing all the information that has been entered into the book. Much
information can be stored about a person including a list of locations
where they may be contacted. Each location has a addresses for each type
of communication media. When someone publishes an entry, they will
designate one location as their _p_r_i_m_a_r_y location, the place to try first.
_p_e_o_p_l_e_p_a_g_e_s supports a personal book as well as a number of public books.
A personal book is private. It is yours & yours alone. You can do
anything you want with it. Nobody else will see it since it is created
with mode 0700. When you run _p_e_o_p_l_e_p_a_g_e_s for the first time, it asks if
you want to create a personal book.
You can browse public books freely, as can anyone else. You can change
only your own entry in a public book.
When _p_e_o_p_l_e_p_a_g_e_s starts up, it automatically locates available public
books by sending out a query to its database server _p_p_a_g_e_s_d(1M). Each
_p_p_a_g_e_s_d that receives the query replies with the logical name and
location of its book. _p_e_o_p_l_e_p_a_g_e_s uses _a_u_t_o_m_o_u_n_t(1M) to access the book
via NFS. Book locations may also be supplied as command-line arguments
in the form of the full path name of the location of the database
directory. To disable the query for public books, use the
-_d_e_f_a_u_l_t_B_o_o_k_L_i_s_t ``'' option or specify the X resource *_d_e_f_a_u_l_t_B_o_o_k_L_i_s_t
with no value (see below).
_p_p_a_g_e_s_d also receives messages from users running InPerson and creates
skeleton entries for them in one of the public books specified by your
system administrator.

Shortly after you start _p_e_o_p_l_e_p_a_g_e_s, it searches the public books to see
if you have published an entry for yourself. If it doesn't find one, or
if it finds only the skeleton entry created by _p_p_a_g_e_s_d, _p_e_o_p_l_e_p_a_g_e_s will
ask you to publish a full entry.

Your personal book is created in the directory ._P_e_o_p_l_e_P_a_g_e_s_P_e_r_s_o_n_a_l in
your home directory. You can customize both the name and the cover of
your personal book as shown on the book-selection button at the top of
the main window. The name goes into the file ._l_a_b_e_l in the database
directory. Two cover images in either .xpm (X Pixmap) or .rgb (standard
SGI) format are required. One is displayed when the book is closed, the
other when it is opened for reading. They go in the files ._c_o_v_e_r-_c_l_o_s_e_d
and ._c_o_v_e_r-_o_p_e_n in the database directory. The images should be 44 x 32
pixels. Xpm format is recommended because it allows you to tag the
predominant background color of the pixmap. Having this information
allows _p_e_o_p_l_e_p_a_g_e_s to make a better visual presentation of your images.
To tag the background add " s background" at the end of the line
specifying the predominant background color. For example the line
% c #848484
becomes
% c #848484 s background

The default X11 resources file /usr/lib/X11/app-defaults/PeoplePages
contains a few resources that can be customized at the beginning of the
file. You can edit this file as root to make changes for all users on
the system. If you want your private customizations, create or edit the
file to $HOME/.desktop-`hostname`/PeoplePages to add the following
resources with your desired values.
PeoplePages*defaultBookList
This resource specifies a list of book pathnames (separated with
colons) to be used instead of the public books. If the list is
empty, then only your personal book is displayed. For example:
PeoplePages*defaultBookList: /var/ppages/sales:/var/ppages/support
will display just those 2 books under /var/ppages.
PeoplePages*galleryView
This resource controls whether _p_e_o_p_l_e_p_a_g_e_s displays images or icons
for entries with pictures. If set false, accessing public
(networked) books is sped up. The default is true.
PeoplePages*wwwBrowser
This resource specifies the pathname of a WWW browser to be invoked
from the ``View'' button on the information card. The default is

The NFS optional software must be installed and configured. The
_a_u_t_o_m_o_u_n_t(1M) /hosts map must be configured to access public books and it
must be able to resolve the PeoplePages server's hostname. Write access
to the public books directories is needed if users are permitted to
change their entries using _p_e_o_p_l_e_p_a_g_e_s.
